Snowdonia is a major tourist attraction in Wales and is actually the first of the three national parks to be designated and was made a national park in 1951.

The English name of the park really comes from the highest mountain in Wales which is Mount Snowdon but in welsh is named Eryi. The terms Prince Of Wales and Lord of Snowdonia were both used in the middle ages.

The park is huge and is actually 838 square miles in area and is governed by the national park authority which is made up of the government and national representitives. A lot of the land in Snowdonia is actually private and makes up 69.9% of all of the shares. the rest of the area is owned by forestry commission, national trust, CCW, national park authority and water companies.

62% of all of the people that live in the are speak welsh and there are 26,000 people there altogether. The park gets 6 million tourists a year and is split equally between day visitors and visitors that stay overnight.

Many people actually go to climb the mountains of the area and Mount Everest training is sometimes known to happen here as it prepares future climbers for the perils that lay ahead of them.

Snowdonia is one of the wettest and coldest parts of the British Isles and Crib Goch in Snowdonia is actually the wettest point in the entire UK with an average rainfall of 4,472 millimetres a year over the past thirty years.
