What would be the range of th Sporty’s Air-Scan VII Portable Scanner?

We live 2 miles from Tuscaloosa Regional KTCL, and we have 737s 757s and CRJs/ERJs that come in as charters several times a week usually. Would be neat to hear them. Also for whatever reason flightaware.com does not display the vast majority of the flights going in/out of KTCL. I live right on the G/S for RWY 22 (although most of the lager business jets or commercial jobs use the ILS on RWY 04) Another great use for the scanner is that the Blue Angels are coming to KTCL for the second year in a row this year. I’ve already bought tickets because last year there were over 150,000 people on Saturday. Last year it was great and they had some really good static displays. The C-17 Performance was excellent. It would be great to hear all of the planes and performers come in! But here is the kicker, what would be the range on the Sporty’s Air-Scan VII portable scanner. I live two miles to the airport the way the crow flies. Would I be able to hear transitions from my house?

From two miles away you should have no problem hearing the tower or the planes. As the planes move farther away and switch frequencies to other control stations you might lose the ground side of the conversation, but pilots are normally required to read back the instructions they are given, so you shouldn’t miss out on much.

Flightaware only tracks IFR flights so if they are VFR, or have canceled their IFR clearance they won’t be shown. Its not like radar where every plane flying shows up.

If you’re interested in listening to blue angels/C-17/ or any other military flights you need a radio with the UHF Mil-Air band. I would recommend looking at radios from Radio Shack, Uniden or GRE. Scanner master is a great place to look for and compare radios at the same place. Radioreference.com is a great scanner website, and has forums specifically about listening to aircraft comms
